This project is completely for me and designed to use up some of my Tula Pink fabrics to show off all my favourite prints across the collections I have.
I made the quilt at the Modern Quilt Club retreat last May and then it sat in a box to send to Cath at Cumbrian Longarming for a year. When I started completing a pile of projects this one was on the top of my list to send away to have quilted. I love how the large blocks really showcase Tula’s large prints and the concept of large prints in large blocks is something I want to utilise in more quilts because this one looks stunning.
This pattern is a great stash buster and I have given you a basic tutorial below on how to create it.
To make this 90″ square quilt you will need:
25 Fussy cuts 6.5″ Squares for centre fabric
25 Fat Quarters for Churn Dash Fabrics
25 Fat Quarters for Background fabrics
3m 108″ Backing fabric.
Each block is 18 inches finished using a 6 in (finished) centre. The following cuts are needed for each block:
Centre fabric:
(1) 6.5″ x 6.5″ square (A)
Churn dash fabric:
(4) 6.5″ x 3.5″ strip (B)
(1) 10″ square (C)
Background fabric:
(4) 6.5″ x 3.5″ strip (D)
(1) 10″ square (E)
Step 1:
Sew together pieces B and D to give you (4) 6.5″ squares
Step 2:
Use Blossom Heart Quilts tutorial for Alternative Method for making Half square triangles out of pieces C and E. This will then need to be trimmed down to make 6.5″ squares.
You now have (9) 6.5″ squares that will form our complete block
Step 3:
Arrange the 9 squares to assemble the below block.
Step 4:
Once all blocks are completed take the time to arrange the blocks according to your own preferences. I love a random look so that was my aim when laying them out in the below photo.

Step 5:
Assemble your top.

This is a really simple quilt top to complete in a single day and Cath had it quilted and returned to me within 10 days (including all shipping times and the fact that she had a bunch of pre-booked quilts already). Using the left others from the quilt plus some jelly roll strips I received from a friend, I created the binding adding to the number of prints used in the quilt from my stash. The backing fabric I got from Saira at Olive and Flo Handcraft which is Tula Pink’s Pinkerville 108″ backing fabric.

I completed the binding in less that 4 hours (hand sewing it to the back) and it instantly had to be placed on my bed. It hasn’t moved from its new home since. Of course, it had to be approved by my 3 fussy felines and they all get grumpy when they have to more from the quilt.
Do you have a favourite pattern for big prints?
See you on Thursday
